U.S. travel activity continues to rebound from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Skift, an online travel research organization, all major U.S. travel sectors (flights, hotels, car rentals, traveler activity) are demonstrating greater activity, which is a positive trend that began earlier this year. The Skift Recovery Index (SRI: https://research.skift.com/recovery), a measure designed to gauge the recovery of the travel industry, was 80 for the U.S. in April 2021. The SRI is a measure that has a baseline of 100 for travel industry performance prior to the pandemic. The U.S. SRI has increased steadily from a value of 48 in December 2020 to 80 in April 2021.
Another interesting trend is the pace of recovery of the travel industry by different countries. The SRI is diverging between the more quickly recovering countries compared to those where travel has not resumed. Read the full analysis: HERE. The countries where the travel industry is recovering the most quickly include Mexico, the U.S., China, Russia, and Australia.

As the Memorial Day Weekend approaches, and with summer not far away, the prospects for the resumption of normal travel in the U.S. and around the world continue to improve. Most notably in the U.S., COVID-19 cases are declining and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have updated their recommendations for travel. Expect more changes and modifications for travel recommendations as we move through the summer months. The bottom line: the more people receive their COVID-19 vaccinations, the sooner life will return to normal. Here are the highlights:
COVID-19 cases in the U.S. have been declining since April 9, 2021. Deaths have also been declining since about that time. Source: https://coronavirus.jhu.edu.
The U.S. Congress has passed the Alaska Tourism Restoration Act, which will soon allow cruise ships to conduct round-trip sails from the State of Washington to Alaska. This legislation is pending presidential signature. However, this Act will allow cruises to Alaska to resume and assist in promoting tourism in Alaska.
